Four of the Oneida & Western's SD40-2s hook onto a coal unit train in the L&N's Corbin, KY yard on April 1, 1983. The engines and coal cars were owned by Shamrock Coal Co. and operated by L&N crews on L&N rails, and were simply to guarantee supply of engines and cars. Sid Vaught photo.

In an official company photograph, two of the Illinois Central's brand new Alco C636s, #1101 and #1102, are seen loading a coal train somewhere on the Kentucky Division in early 1968. The C636s quickly developed a poor reputation and were stored or leased out unless absolutely needed.

Photographer Don Furler caught New York, Ontario & Western "Light 400" 4-8-2 #408 at an unknown location with a rather lengthy passenger train on July 13th, 1947. The length and time of year indicate that this was likely a "Camp Special" since by this time O&W passenger ridership had dwindled

NYS&W #3040 and CSX #2722 crossing Route 20 as they arrive at Sangerfield, NY, the southernmost active portion of the Utica Branch. There's a cluster of feed mills that keep this portion of the line open, and in the spring they generate a traffic surge that warrants extra leased power.

A New York, Susquehanna & Western freight with a leased CSX GP38-2 leading drifts down through Clayville, NY on the NYS&W Utica Branch yesterday. The GP38-2 was brought in to assist with to springtime surge in traffic to the feed mills in Sangerfield, NY.
